FX Network's Redemption Poetry Slam Competition OFFICIAL RULES

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN.

Open to legal residents of the continental United States and Canada 18 years old or older; the contest begins March 12, 2004 and ends April 6, 2004.

  1. Eligibility: Open only to legal residents of the continental United States who are 18 years old or older, as of January 5, 2004. Employees (and their immediate families and household members) of FX Network, any person or employee of an entity involved in the development, production, implementation, promotion or distribution of the Contest (including prize suppliers), and any other person or entity associated with the Contest, and each of their respective parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, agencies and representatives ("Contest Entities") are ineligible to enter or win. Participants can only register for the Contest under one name and cannot use any other person’s name. Failure to follow any part of these Official Rules can lead to disqualification from the Contest.
  2. Contest: Our competition is a search for one who can write and deliver the best poem about the word "redemption" relative to their life experience and/or African American’s historical experience in America. The ten (10) market "Poetry Slam" will be facilitated by existing poetry slam or spoken word venues with the regional winners determined by standard rules as listed by Poetry Slam Inc (www.poetryslam.com). Each show will be videotaped with the regional winners tapes to viewed and judged by FX designated marketing firm Urban Marketing Corporation of America (UMCA) staff who will select the ultimate winner. Each region will determine a winner in a one (1) night only competition.  Nine (9) of the regional winners will win a $500 cash prize. One grand prize winner will be chosen among the ten (10) competing markets and will win a round trip for two (2) to Los Angeles and $1,000.
  3. Participation:  Designated Slam Master’s in each competing market will post a listing within their local poetry club to solicit poets for the contest three weeks prior to the designated event date. After one week (1) each Slam Master will select Fifteen (15) poets on a first come first serve basis. Each poet will be given the criteria listed above and have a two-week time frame to write two (2) poems and then perform on event date in their given market.

 Event dates are as follows: New York – March 12, 2004, Miami – March 17, 2004, Atlanta – March 21, 2004, Los Angeles – March 23, 2004, Dallas – March 25, 2004, Detroit – March 26, 2004, Chicago – March 27, 2004, Houston – April 2, 2004, Philadelphia – April 5, 2004, Washington D.C. April 6, 2004.

  1. How to Win: Each poem must be of the poet’s own construction. Poem must adhere to the word or theme of "redemption" and how it is relative to their life and/or African American’s experience in America.  The word "redemption" will be used as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary. Re-demp-tion: 1. To set free; deliverance upon payment of ransom: 2. Rescue.  3. To restore the honor, worth, or reputation of. 4. The redemption of prisoners taken in war; the redemption of a ship and cargo.  5. Performance of the obligation stated in a note, bill, bond, or other evidence of debt, by making payment to the holder. 6. The procuring of God’s favor by the sufferings and death of Christ; the ransom or deliverance of sinners from the bondage of sin and the penalties of God’s violated law. 7. Purchasing back something previously sold. 8. Recovery of something pawned or mortgaged.  

Each poet will be given three (3) minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read their poem.  If the poet goes over, points will be deducted from the total score. The poet may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments. Five (5) random audience members will be chosen to be judges to rate poets on a scale of 1-10. Of the scores the poet receives from the judges the high and low scores are dropped and the middle three are added together giving the poet a total score of 0-30.  Two (2) rounds (or more if necessary due to tie) will determine winner.  Each event will be videotaped.  Grand prize winner will be determined by poet’s articulation, stage presence, passion, and overall creativity with the poem.

Notification: Grand Prize winner will be determined and notified by April 7, 2004.  If potential Grand Prize Winner is found to be ineligible for any reason, or if he/she does not comply with the Official Rules, the potential Grand Prize Winner will be disqualified and the prize will be awarded to an alternate. Additionally, the potential Grand Prize winner will be sent, via overnight mail, an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability and publicity (unless prohibited by law), which must be returned fully executed within 48 hours of issuance thereof or the prize will be forfeited and awarded to an alternate. Once submitted, entries become the sole property of the Sponsor and will not be returned. 

5.      Prizes: Regional Winners (9) $500. Grand Prize Winner (1): (a) $1,000 (b) a three day/two night trip for two to Los Angeles, California including round-trip coach air transportation for two from the major U.S. airport closest to the winner’s home, round-trip land transfers between the airport and the hotel, two night standard hotel accommodations (one room, double occupancy). Travel must be completed by July 11, 2004. (ARV $2,000).  Transportation, taxes, meals, gratuities and all other expenses not specified herein as being awarded will be the sole responsibility of the winner. Prior to issuance of travel documents, a guest of the Grand Prize winner must sign and return a publicity release (unless prohibited) and liability release. Winner and guest must travel together on the same itinerary. Odds of winning a prize depend on the number of eligible entries received. No substitution, transfer or cash equivalent for any prize is valid, except the Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, due to prize unavailability or for any other reason, make a substitution of comparable or greater value. All details of prizes not specified herein are at the sole discretion of Sponsor. The Grand Prize winner is responsible for any and all applicable federal, provincial, state and local laws, rules and regulations, including, but not limited to, licensing and insurance requirements. All taxes (including income taxes) are the sole responsibility of the winners. All winners must sign publicity and liability release forms.  Total ARV $3,000.

6.      General Conditions: If any prize notification is returned as undeliverable or if the Sponsor is unable to contact any potential winner, the prize will be awarded to an alternate. Except where prohibited by law, acceptance of any prize constitutes permission for the Sponsor and its agents and designees to use the winner’s name, address (city and state only), statements, biography, image, and/or likeness for advertising and trade purposes without further compensation, worldwide and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known and hereafter devised, including without limitation, online. Any person attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with the Contest, as solely determined by Sponsor, will be disqualified and may be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The Contest is void where prohibited by law. By participating, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor, which are final and binding in all respects. Entrants agree that neither any Contest Entities, nor any of their officers, directors, employees, shareholders and agents shall be liable for losses or injuries of any kind resulting from acceptance, possession or use of prizes or participation in the Contest; for entries that are late, tampered with, garbled, incomplete, lost, stolen, misdirected, interrupted or otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules for any reason (all such entries will be disqualified); for typographical errors in the Official Rules or human, printing or other errors; or for lost or delayed data transmission, defects or line failures of any telephone network, computer equipment, software, Internet traffic congestion, or any other problems or technical malfunctions. Any entry information collected in connection with the Contest shall be used only in a manner consistent with the consent given by entrants at the time of the entry, with these Official Rules and MGM’s corporate privacy policy.
